It seems counterintuitive,  but the way to truly be helpful to someone in pain or denial or projection,  is to let them have their pain.  Let them feel the pain fully.  Let them feel the pain safely.  Let them feel and wonder??? Let them sit WITH uncertainty, not MIND attached.  Let them share their current reality of how much a choice has hurt,  how challenging this current decision is, how hard this current cause and current effect REALLY is,  Let them feel whatever IT is they are currently feeling.  Let them descend into feeling any CURRENT  self inflicted drama and crisis and chaos and pain,  without jumping in to clean it up,  without jumping in to offer advice,  to avoid it to diminish it  to deny it to make it smaller,  or make it go away.
