"Sobah is set to open Australia’s first
non-alcoholic brewery in Burleigh Heads"
"The low-to-no-alcohol category has witnessed incredible growth in recent years, spurred by innovative new operators on a mission to prove you can have all the flavour, minus the headache. One of the pioneers on the craft beer scene is undoubtedly the Gold Coast-born Sobah, which has been firmly focussed on changing the culture around drinking since 2017 with its bush tucker-infused beers. Now, the proudly Aboriginal owned and led non-alcoholic craft beer company is set to embark upon their most ambitious venture yet, a 650-sqm brewing facility with a cafe attached.
Here’s everything we know so far …
Sobah Brewery & Cafe is coming to life in the brand-new industrial complex on Burleigh Connection Road. Upstairs will be a multi-purpose space that will lend itself to events such as yoga, workshops, meetings, celebrations and events. Downstairs is where you will find Sobah’s impressive new 50-hectolitre brewing equipment. “This is a two-year project,” says Clinton Schultz, who is undertaking the mammoth project alongside his wife Lozen Schultz.
“We needed to take back control of brewing for the purposes of quality control, distribution and IP. In contract brewing, there’s a lot of fluctuation in terms of availability, serviceability and quality. Having our own facility will mean a constant supply of fresh beer in the market.”
Often in the brewery space, a brewpub is an obvious choice to make.
“A non-alc brewery wouldn’t suit the typical brewpub style, so we’ve created a cafe-style venue for breakfast and lunches and everything in between. We’ll have a bar set up, but it will feature all non-alcoholic beverages and cocktails,” Lozen said.
While the coffee side of things is still being finalised, we have been told that the daytime-focused venue will be something pretty different for the Gold Coast in that it will feature native ingredients throughout the entire menu. There will be seating for roughly 60 or so between inside and outside. Sobah is targeting a soft launch in mid-July for drinks and coffee with the view to properly launch the menu early August with events kicking off towards the end of the month, just in time for Ocsober.
We’ll bring you an in-depth look closer to the time, but in the interim, follow Sobah Brewery & Cafe’s progress on Instagram."
