“I’m not kidding: those who delegate all their writing, thinking and creative expression to machines are going to wake up one day and discover that they can no longer write or think. You need to make your own art. You need to keep your brain working. You need to stay human.

There’s a moment in Brave New World where one of the leaders of this fictional dystopia celebrates the fact that art and writing have been abolished, because people have been “delivered from those horrible emotions.” Creation was emotionally taxing, so they stopped doing it.

And what’s happening today is that millions are eager to relinquish having to read, having to create, because it means the discomfort of being alone with your own thoughts. You have to wrestle with yourself in order to create something, and we are scared of that process.

But I promise you, doing the reading, sitting alone with yourself, making the art—even if it’s bad art, even if no one sees it—is the only way you’re going to live a fully rewarding and satisfying life. Don’t deprive yourself of that experience. It’s worth it. It’s so worth it.

My favorite genre of tweet is guys who have never read a book posting a screenshot of the most garbage AI-generated poem you’ve ever seen and going “wow. stunning.”

We have enough great poems written by humans that we don't need to build machines for the express purpose of generating bad ones.

If you’ve never encountered the poetry of Shakespeare, Shelley, Milton, Plath, the Rosettis, I suppose an AI poem might seem impressive, in the same way a man who’s never eaten might consider a Hostess Twinkie (or Big Mac) fine dining.”
