Who Was Hildegard? A Power House Leader! As Is Jessica O'Donoghue.

The life and legacy of Hildegard von Bingen

She died more than 800 years ago, yet she's one of the most recognisable women from the Middle Ages. Born in 1098, among her many achievements, Hildegard von Bingen was a composer, poet, herbalist and mystic.

From the convent she founded in Rupertsberg, a region overlooking the Rhine, Hildegard corresponded with the most influential figures of her time including popes, bishops, philosophers, and even the legendary Emperor Frederick Barbarossa.

Efforts to raise her to sainthood began soon after her death in 1179, though it took until 2012 for the pope to officially canonise her.

"She was an absolute powerhouse of a woman,"
says Australian singer and composer Jessica O'Donoghue
who has performed and programmed many of Hildegard's works.
"Hildegard was one of the earliest examples of a feminist in a time where women were really oppressed."
