Scholarship Recipients

The Brett Whiteley Studio, administered by the Art Gallery of New South Wales, awards an annual travelling art scholarship to talented artists aged between 20 and 30 with an established body of work.

For the 2023 scholarship, the Studio will offer two types of residencies under the one application: a residency at the Cité internationale des arts, Paris, for one artist, and a two-week residency at Shark Island Kangaroo Valley for five artists.

Mrs Beryl Whiteley (1917–2010) generously allocated funds for the scholarship in memory of her late son, Brett Whiteley, both to encourage excellence in painting and to offer young artists career development opportunities.

The 2023 scholarship has seen an increase in its cash prizes and will consist of one recipient receiving $50,000 and three-month residency at the Cité as well as five recipients each receiving $10,000 and a two-week residency at Kangaroo Valley in the Southern Highlands, NSW. The Shark Island Kangaroo Valley residency will be administered by the Shark Island Institute, in consultation with the Brett Whiteley Studio and the Art Gallery of NSW.

Residencies will occur on the following dates:

Cité internationale des arts, Paris from July to September 2024 with a further three months in Europe – for one recipient only

Shark Island Kangaroo Valley from 7 to 20 November 2023 with a curriculum and various events and programs produced by the Brett Whiteley Studio – for five recipients simultaneously.

To be considered for selection, an applicant must comply with all entry instructions and conditions.

This year the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship will be judged by guest artist Guido Maestri.

Recipients and finalists

"In its 25th year, the annual Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship has been awarded to six artists.

Mark Maurangi Carrol, age 28, from Randwick, NSW has been awarded a three-month residency at the Cité internationale des arts, Paris and $50,000.

Five other artists each receive $10,000 and a two-week residency at Shark Island Kangaroo Valley in New South Wales: Sis Cowie, age 24 from Malvern East, Victoria; Joseph Christie Evans, age 23 from Newtown, NSW; Lauren O’Connor, age 29 from Enfield, NSW; Oliver Scherer, age 25 from Wheeler Heights, NSW and Angus White, age 24 from Hawthorn East, Victoria.

These artists, along with five other finalists, were selected from 181 entries by guest artist judge Guido Maestri, who has curated an exhibition of paintings from the bodies of work of each finalist and scholarship recipient, which is on display at the Brett Whiteley Studio.

The annual scholarship was created from an endowment by Beryl Whiteley, who died in 2010. It was inspired by the profound effect international travel and study had on her son, the artist Brett Whiteley, as a result of winning the Italian Government Travelling Art Scholarship at the age of 20.

Previously, the Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship was awarded to a single artist each year and included a three-month residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. However, due to COVID-19 international travel restrictions, it was not possible to host the 2020 and 2021 scholarship recipients overseas, and instead a local residency was awarded to five artists. Thanks to the continuing generosity of Shark Island Kangaroo Valley, in 2022, both the overseas and the local residencies have been awarded. In 2023, the previous year format was maintained, and the cash prize increased to a total of $100,000 across the six Scholarships."
